Good afternoon Argos! This post is in direct response to day five of interning with the University of West Florida’s Homecoming Committee. At 10:00am this morning the Committee, two of the GAs, and I met and discussed a re-cap of our first training for the Sunday that occurred Monday, May 14th. We discussed what would be the new look for Homecoming 2012, some of the competitions that are to occur throughout the week, as well as some varying committees that are going to be established to make Homecoming bigger and better than before.
Homecoming Spirit Coordinator: Laura Jansen, Homecoming’s Spirit Coordinator, oversees the UWF Homecoming Spirit Squad. This squad consists of volunteers who will meet based on availability. As of now the squad has not been created, but applications will open up in the Fall semester, so be on the look-out!
Marketing and Advertising: Be on the watch for some pretty unique methods of displaying what Homecoming 2012 has to offer. You never know when you will see something just ‘pop-up’ throughout the months of August, September, and into October. I would like to remain intentionally vague to prevent the surprise factor from being ruined. Lets just say there will be some pretty cool things to bestow your eyes upon.
Volunteers NEEDED: Obviously Homecoming 2012 would not be the same without our wonderful volunteers thus we will be searching for UWF students to take part in making the various events, that occur throughout Homecoming Week, happen. There will be two-to-three mandatory meetings / informational sessions, in which each volunteers must attend at least one of them. These meetings / informational sessions will be interactive and contain some form of skit, videos, do’s and don’t’s, and the like. Also, there is talk of receiving a special Volunteer T-Shirt (which is pretty cool), so be on the look-out for that! Each volunteer would spend at least an hour, if not more, of their time putting together or breaking down an event as well as designated a specific location to work. There will be more to come on the logistics as the planning process continues. Additionally, we highly encourage Student Organizations to get involved with volunteering throughout Homecoming Week. Not only will this allow for you to get your organization out there, but it will show how awesome it is to be a part of Homecoming 2012!
Training Re-Cap (Feedback): Ben Stubbs, the Assistant Director of Student Activities, has proposed a bucket-list for summer interactive and community building-type activities for the Homecoming Committee to partake in. This consists of going to the beach, bowling, skating, etc. We have proposed our first outing (a beach day) to be sooner, rather than later due to Christina Duncan (the current Program Advisor Graduate Assistant) leaving us in the beginning of June.
Homecoming Branding: I do not want to give anything away, but I am pretty excited for the new proposed Homecoming logo. As you may or may not know, the theme this year is “The Legend Lives: Some schools have stories, we have a legend,” which focuses on the story of Jason and the Argonauts. That is all that I will say for now!
Sponsorships: Homecoming is currently in search for those would like to take part in sponsoring the organization as well as all of the events that are incorporated within. If you know or if anyone you know that would be interested in sponsoring, please let UWF’s Student Activities know as soon as possible.
Due to next Monday being Memorial Day, we will not be holding our regularly scheduled meeting. Thus, our next meeting will Monday, June 4th starting at 10:00am sharp! Until then, have a great day and GO ARGOS!
132 days until Homecoming 2012!
